Ibrahim Ali-Salaam

b. 1976, Boston MA

Ibrahim Ali-Salaam is a Boston born and bred artist who has been professional artist for over 20 years. Having studied at the School of Museum of Fine Arts, he is classically trained and brings his knowledge of draftsmanship to his figurative expressionist paintings and drawings.

One of seven children, Ali-Salaam often explores themes of family, relationships and identity in his work. His partners, parents, and son are often models and inspiration for his pieces.

Having studied under Bill Flynn and Milton Derr at the SMFA and more recently with Paul Goodnight, Ali-Salaam is honored to follow in the footsteps of art icons of Boston’s past who have come before him.

Ali-Salaam’s work can be found in collections across the United States and has worked with institutions and galleries around the United States. He is on the board of ShowUp, a nonprofit art gallery in Boston. His work can currently be found in the Boston area at BLKchip Gallery.

About my artwork

My art tends to focus on the human form mostly though I have moved on playing with abstraction of the figure.

I have always been deeply inspired by the works of Käthe Kollwitz and Egon Schiele as well as John Woodrow Wilson and Kerry James Marshall.

Learning about the German Expressionist movement and its reinterpretation by the Boston Expressionists such as Hyman Bloom and Karl Zerbe were transformational for me also, particularly during my years at the School of Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University.
